outdoor school

4th graders had a busy week at Outdoor School at Forest Glen.  The first day was spent learning about the food chain and then we took a one-mile trail walk to identify native trees and bird calls.  Day 2 introduced students to vertebrates and invertebrates.  4th graders worked in groups to search for and identify vertebrates and invertebrates.  One group found a slug!  On day 3, students hiked past a 200-year-old tree on their way to the pond.  At the pond, they dipped their nets down to the bottom and pulled up a layer to investigate the habitat of mussels, mayfly nymphs, and small fish.  Our trip ended on day 4 with a reading of our wildlife reports, a trip up the Tower, and a visit to the Pioneer Homestead.
