Letter From Mr. Crist, Athletic Director
April 22, 2020
Hilltopper Families:
Whew, what a few weeks these have been. Many life changes have had to be made and difficult decisions decided. The recent news from the State of Illinois and the Illinois High School Association that has drawn the end of in-person classroom activity (E-Learning will continue through this Spring) as well as the end of Spring Sports has all been news none of us wanted. However, let me be the first to remind you that this school year has been nothing short of spectacular. None of this would have been possible without the following:
To the Seniors: Farrah, Vaughn, Marcus, Emma, Bill, Capria, Cole, Jeff, Jeremiah, Cece, Dawson, Leo, Halle, Zach, Wade, Sebastian, Mark, Mae Grace, Isabelle, Eric, Quenton, Makayla, Michael, Grace, Thank you. Thank you for being top-tier students both in and out of the classroom. Thank you for giving your absolute everything to Schlarman during your career. You were truly an inspiration and role models for all of those to come through these halls. My heart hurts imagining what your feelings are during these times but personally speaking, I tend to lean on looking towards the positives when I feel down. The hundreds and hundreds of laughs and jokes you all filled this school year with, the creative ideas and dreams you allowed me to be a part of, the countless hours you volunteered with both in the school and the community and most importantly the friendships that we built in just a year are all moments that I will cherish. As you continue these last few weeks online, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have given. You all will strive to successes that are unmeasurable, and I know I speak for the entire staff when I say, we cannot wait to cheer you on through those life moments.
To the Students continue to be strong and use this time wisely. Work hard on your schoolwork, spend time with your families, stay active and pick up a new skill. This is challenging not only for the Seniors, but we know you as well.
To the Parents: if it wasn’t for you and your children, Schlarman wouldn’t be what it is today. Filled with amazing and brilliant students partnered with parents who day in and day out go above and beyond for their kids.
To the Staff: similar to the children who attend this school, this place wouldn’t be the same without you. Your continued love, support and teaching is truly irreplaceable. This I know will continue when “normalcy” returns. Continue to stay safe, strong, and healthy during these difficult times. Together we will rise again and be stronger than ever.
I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. Psalm 16:8
All The Best,
Eric Crist
Athletic Director

Enhanced Dual Enrollment Program Now at Schlarman Academy
January 21, 2020
For Immediate Release
Schlarman Academy provides enhanced
Dual Enrollment Program
Schlarman Academy students now have an opportunity to graduate with over a year of college credit through an enhanced dual enrollment program started this school year. Junior and senior students are able to take up to 36 hours of college level courses taught by a combination of Schlarman Academy faculty and DACC faculty at the North Campus. Six courses have been offered in both semesters this year in a variety of subjects. All of these courses in this hybrid program are currently offered free of charge to SA students because of private donations that support the program.
The average yearly total cost of a public four -year (in-state) college is currently $25,290.00, and $40,940.00 for out-of-state. The average yearly cost for a private four -year college is $50,900. The average cost of community college is $4,864 (in-state) and $8,622.00 (out-of-state) per year. The opportunity to earn college credits while in high school will significantly lessen the financial burden for SA students and their families as they continue onto the college of their choice. Currently, a large majority of the junior and senior classes are enrolled in at least one of the dual credit courses with many of them taking multiple classes.
Mark Janesky, Schlarman Academy principal commented on the new program. "We are thrilled to offer this enhanced dual enrollment program to our students and are grateful for the partnership with DACC and the financial sponsors that make it possible. Not only will this provide our students with more course offerings it will also allow them to earn significant college credit without leaving our campus. It is our hope that we will be able to expand the program with additional dual enrollment courses in the 2020-2021 school year.”
For further information on the program please contact Janet Picillo, Schlarman Academy Advancement Director at (217) 442-1184.

Football Returns to Drummy Field at Schlarman Academy!
Schlarman Academy is excited to announce that we will have an eight-man football program for the 2019-2020 school year.
We are very happy about being able to bring back football and field a team for the fall of 2019. There is a tremendous amount of enthusiasm. and we have a number of kids with a lot of talent that have expressed interest in playing on the team. It is all about giving our kids as many opportunities as possible to grow.
Eight-man football will give our kids a chance to play in a competitive situation and it affords us the opportunity to develop our younger players in a safe environment. It is a great move for our school and we believe it will be a great move for other small schools that want to provide the great sport of football.
We are excited that the students of Schlarman Academy, which has a rich football tradition, will be able to experience Friday Night Lights, and Game Day Saturdays.

Cahill to Earn Associates Degree and High School Diploma at Graduation
Although small in number, our senior class this year has already accomplished some amazing feats. Look at Kristen Cahill, for example. This energetic senior – the youngest of thirteen children in the Cahill family – has had a plan since her freshman year; this year, in May, she will achieve that plan.
Kristen made the decision early in her high school career to complete her first two years of college while simultaneously finishing her high school requirements. This meant that she often took her regular high school load (including religion, science, math, English, and the many electives required to receive a diploma) while also completing dual enrollment classes which would prepare her for entry into classes after high for her chosen career field: nursing.
Kristen has completed such college-level courses as Anatomy and Physiology and Chemistry (including lab attendance), general education courses such as American History, Psychology, and Rhetoric I and II, and courses such as health, p.e., and a variety of courses that meet DACC requirements.
Kristen will receive her A. S. (Associates Degree in Science) on May 19 from DACC and will receive her high school diploma from Schlarman Academy on May 21. She has already been accepted to Lakeview College of Nursing and is ready for her post-high school life in the field of nursing. Knowing Kristen as well as we do, we think her goals to complete her nursing degree and finish with studies in the field of Nurse Practitioner are just the beginning of another plan which she will certainly complete.
Congratulations, Kristen!
