About The Spiritual Life Program
At Schlarman Academy, the total development of the student is always foremost in our minds. We strive to assist our students in their intellectual, emotional, social, cultural, physical and vocational pursuits. In addition, the development of the spiritual life of the student is the basis upon which all others are judged and pursued.
Spirituality inspires a profound respect for human freedom which is the indispensable basis for human growth. Schlarman Academy strives to develop mature persons who will integrate their social, physical, intellectual lives with their religious life. Campus Ministry at Schlarman Academy is the vehicle by which these goals are realized. The specific goal of the Campus Ministry program is to complement the family in its primary goal in religious education, to support the local community of faith, and to extend the religious lessons of the classroom to lived faith experiences.
Besides the availability of the sacraments and liturgical program, the Chaplain’s Office helps students establish meaningful religious experiences through retreats, liturgies, reconciliation services, service projects, field trips and pilgrimages, faith sharing and opportunities for reflection and recollection for students and faculty alike. A special emphasis is placed on the centrality of the sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation. In addition, the Chaplain’s Office offers opportunities to assist parents in their role as the primary educators of their child.
Participation in and respect for the spiritual life program is central to building a community of faith where Christ can be discovered and his love celebrated. There are many opportunities at Schlarman Academy for students to pray together and worship and give thanks to God. In order to gain the most from these experiences, a certain climate of participation and attitude is necessary and expected of all students. For example, Sacred Silence, which provides each student with the opportunity to pray, become recollected, and peacefully reflect on the meaning of ritual, is necessary.
In adherence with the precepts of the Church, students and their families are reminded of the importance of weekly Sunday worship of God. It is an expectation that by their attendance at Schlarman Academy, that students will willingly participate in and make every effort to nurture their relationship with God. This includes volunteering for ministry as musicians, lectors, servers, eucharistic ministers, and other liturgical ministries.
Finally, spiritual life at Schlarman Academy offers opportunities for students to reflect on the direction of their lives through confidential spiritual counseling. The chaplain is available for Spiritual Direction and the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation at nearly any time.
